The AMEC Gala Awards Dinner was held on Wednesday 2nd June. At this dinner the AMEC Media Awards and the prestigious AMEC Prospector Award were presented.
The AMEC Media Awards are a highly coveted recognition of excellence for journalists covering the Australian mineral exploration and mining industry. There are four separate awards each being judged on criteria such as clarity, relevance, the quality of research, the level of impact on industry stakeholders and the overall benefit to the mineral exploration and mining industry.
The Joe Keeling Award is given to the author of the most outstanding article/s on the mineral exploration and/or mining industry by a resource journalist with less than five years journalistic or media experience and published in an Australian journal in the preceding 12 months. This year’s winner was Ms Frances Pratt of the Kalgoorlie Miner, for her series of excellent articles on the gold royalties issue.
The AMEC Electronic Media Award recognises excellence in radio, television and internet news journalism. It is awarded to the author of a report or series of reports which go to air or are published in the preceding 12 months and which contribute to a wider understanding of the mineral exploration and mining industry. The 2010 award was presented to Babs McHugh, ABC Radio for her series of articles on Flow Through Shares.
The AMEC Print Journalism Award for Journalism (Magazine) is given to the author of an article, or series of articles, published in any Australian magazine in the preceding 12 months, which explores in detail, issues of importance to the Australian mineral exploration and mining sector and which educates industry stakeholders. This year’s award was presented to Ron Berryman of Resourcestocks magazine for his July 2009 article “Searching for the next elephant”.
The AMEC Print Journalism Award for Journalism (Newspaper) is made to the author of an article, printed in an Australian daily or weekly newspaper in the preceding 12 months, which contributes to a wider understanding of the Australian mineral exploration and mining industry. The 2010 award was given to Ms Kate Emery of the West Australian for her article titled ‘Poseidon adventure’, published on 29 August 2009. The article describes the fantastic Poseidon story during West Australia’s frenzied nickel boom in 1969/70.
The AMEC Prospector Award recognises an outstanding mineral exploration discovery made in any country, by individuals working for an Australian resident company. The award is biased towards Greenfield discoveries but will not be confined to Greenfield discoveries where the discovery possesses other outstanding qualities.
The 2010 AMEC Prospector Award was presented to Margaret Hawke, John Evans & Graeme Hutton (dec)
for their role in the discovery of DeGrussa (Doolgunna) Gold – Copper project - which is located 900 kms north of Perth and approximately 150 kms north of Meekatharra in the Peak Hill mineral field of Western Australia.
The judging panel considered that the discovery was a special mix of technical and scientific excellence, innovation, persistence and outstanding leadership.
All three winners played their part in the considerable planning, research, geological analysis, mapping and drilling in the exploration area, which resulted in a significant discovery that ranges 7 to 10 million tonnes grading >5% copper and 2 grams/tonne.
